We’ve already discussed a few of the great products we have to protect the front end of your R1200 GS when you venture off the pavement. But if you spend more time road touring on your R1200 RT, you’ll need a different type of protection. A paved road, while usually smoother than dirt, isn’t nearly as forgiving if your motorcycle ends up with one of the shiny sides down. That’s precisely why Wunderlich has developed a few key BMW motorcycle parts that will protect your ride when accidents happen. We’ve also included a few of the videos we’ve made that can help you through installation.

Wunderlich Engine Protection Bars

With the boxer engine that is found on all of the R-series motorcycles, one of the particular dangers that a drop or a skid can bring is damage to the valve covers. Since the cylinder heads protrude pretty far from the frame they’re also one of the first parts to touch the ground in a fall. Dragging the heart of your machine across the blacktop is never good so give it some breathing room with the Wunderlich Engine Protection Bars. For the R1200 RT there are versions for both the original oilhead motor (PN: 8160735-736) and for the later liquid cooled models (PN: 20380101-103).

Wunderlich Rear Protection Bars

It’s not just the engine that sticks out from the side of the frame. In the rear, your saddlebags can also take quite a bit of punishment if you lay your bike down. To complete the set of protection bars, there are also Rear Protection Bars that will save your saddlebags plus provide you with a perfect place to grip and lift your motorcycle to get the rubber back to the road. Like with the Wunderlich Engine Protection Bars above, there are different versions for oilhead (PN: 8160216-179) and liquid cooled (PN: 20450101-103) motorcycles.

Double Shock Paralever Slider

When it comes to your drivetrain, it’s not just the cylinder heads that you should protect against spills. Any damage to the final drive on the paralever arm can be disastrous and very expensive to fix. The Wunderlich Double Shock Paralever Slider inserts into the final drive housing of your R1200 RT and takes the brunt of any impact or should you happen to lay your motorcycle down. We call it the double shock because it is actually made of two different materials: the hard plastic shell and a softer shock-absorbing bumper. The installation is incredibly easy, as you can see in the video below. The Double Shock Paralever Slider (PN: 8160663) fits both oilhead and liquid cooled R1200’s.

Wunderlich Sidestand Enlargement Plate

Skilled riding can prevent most spills and accidents while you’re on your motorcycle. But when you’re not on it, there’s nothing you can do, right? Wrong. Hot asphalt or loose dirt can cause a situation that is unsafe when your R1200 RT is parked on the sidestand. The Wunderlich Sidestand Enlargement Plate solves the problem by doubling the surface area of the particularly small foot on the factory sidestand and giving your motorcycle a more sturdy foundation. It’s one of the simplest but most effective protection measures you can take for your BMW motorcycle. Plus, the serrations on the edge make it much easier to flip the sidestand down with your boot! We have a version for the oilhead R1200 RT (PN: 8500046), as well as the liquid cooled model (PN: 32420102), plus a version for nearly every motorcycle BMW makes.
